THE THEATRE OF THE BODY

Robert Markell (1924–2020), recipient of five Emmy Awards, created visual worlds for the stage and screen before devoting the final decades of his life to drawing and painting on Shelter Island. The discovery in 2023 of hundreds of drawings, paintings, and monotypes brought to light a remarkable artistic practice that had remained largely unseen. Bringing together a selection of these works in dialogue with collectible contemporary design, The Theatre of the Body presents a world of reclining figures, fleeting gestures, and luminous color. Created on the East End, these works return home for their first public presentation in the region since the artist’s death in 2020.
